The Whiteford Branch Library, built in the recent past, quickly
reached it’s useful end due to the growth of population within
the county. The Harford County Public Library tasked the design
team to integrate an addition which would not only double
the size of the existing facility but which would not detract
or seemingly alter the appearance of the existing facade.
A 7,000 square foot two story addition was situated behind
the existing structure allowing us to simply extend the existing
facade back seemlessly integrating the expansion. Additionally
a row of windows, acting as sky lights, was added providing a centralized naturally
lit feature to the libraries interior.
The remaining interior was
gutted and subsequently modernized with an increased book
capacity utilizing lower shelving units, expanded public meeting
spaces and administrative spaces, and specialized reading
areas for children, teens, adults, and seniors.
