St. Paul’s Lutheran church needed a solution that would accommodate several obstacles in a single design. The existing 100+ year old sanctuary is a functional well maintained structure still in use today, while the much younger parish hall directly adjacent to the sanctuary was in need of significant repairs and renovations. The congregation also needed to accommodate the growth of the existing day care and religious school program held within the hall as well as develop accessible linking elements and pathways for their elder members.
The design was developed with three separate additions that would seamlessly blend with the context of the site. The outer wing additions hold functions such as parish administrative offices and classroom spaces, while the inner addition provides a linking element with handicapped accessible routes including a new elevator and much needed ancillary spaces for the sanctuary including toilet rooms, and a multipurpose bride room. The inner link was developed to coordinate aesthetically with the existing church, and the two outer wings were to match the existing parish hall.
