Churchville Library and Activity Center is a multi-agency collaborative community project. The building type for Harford County is based upon a successful project completed years prior that incorporated activities run by Harford County Parks and Recreation as well a Harford County Public Libraries.
This particular center was given the challenge of incorporating a 14,000 SF library, a multi-functional gymnasium, community meeting space, and an educational science center. Along with these objectives the county asked for this structure to be made a LEED Silver Certified Building and wanted to incorporate commons space displaying informational boards identifying the LEED features incorporated throughout the building.
The concept for the layout of spaces was designed around a main area incorporating a marketplace theme which brought together the different design elements. This area features a series of sky light windows providing unprotected daylight to the north and protected day lighting to the south which provides clear views to the woodlands located near the building. The gymnasium space was designed a story below the rest of the structure so that the high volume would not overwhelm the proportions of the remaining structures.
